               Event Description

Tour in English. During a morning, go back to the past of Phnom Penh, with the expert Jean Michel Filippi.  This walk is intended to provide a living description of the first and second periods of the French Protectorate.  It will be based on the buildings standing in the heart of the former European compound. The misnamed “Post Office Square” is, in fact, a street; and its architectural evolution will guide us into the early beginnings of the French Protectorate and the upheavals which went along with the installation of the new power. Strong stress will be put on the new institutions the French put in places such as the land registry office and the Bank of Indochina since private individual property and the creation of a currency offer an outstanding grid to approach Cambodian history of that period. The second part of the walk will be dedicated to the street where the Hotel “Le Royal” stands. A walk along this street (92), the creation of the architect Ernest Hébrard, will offer us an ideal opportunity to discover Sosoro Museum but also to understand the architecture and the challenges of the last 29 years of the French Protectorate.     Price: 35usd per person
