Historical Background

​Cavalleria Rusticana, which the Cambodia Opera Project played in September 2018 during the previous Festival, was so successful during its first performances that the publisher Sonzogno asked Ruggero Leoncavallo, who was writing a trilogy historical that it will never end, to tackle a new great success.​

Leoncavallo, who was also a great poet and playwright, was very happy because he expected to have the success and fame that Mascagni received in a few months thanks to Cavalleria Rusticana.

​His work, Pagliacci, which we have the pleasure to propose to you, has lived up to his expectations, since it was his greatest success. There have been others but Pagliacci is probably the only one that has survived the centuries.

The Opera

Pagliacci is an Italian opera in two acts by Leoncavallo, premiered on May 21, 1892 at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan.

​Pagliacci is famous for the mise en abyme of his dramatic action, as well as for his manifesto - exhibited by one of the characters during a Prologue, in which the author calls to bring together fiction and reality, until no longer know how to distinguish one from the other.

​Served by a passionate music and a keen sense of drama, it perfectly illustrates the verist aesthetic, based on the realistic and direct evocation of "slices of life". It precedes certain aspects of the work of Giacomo Puccini, which is often associated with verism, which has been influenced, but beyond​

Cambodia Opera Project

The Cambodia Opera Project (COP) was launched in 2018 by Mezzo-Soprano Ai Iwazaki, the talented conductor of Tokyo's New National Opera Theater, Maestro Jun Iisaka, one of the world's leading contemporary art directors. Opera, Master Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini and His Royal Highness Prince Ravivaddhana Monipong Sisowath.

The purpose of this project is to play an opera with a full orchestra, which has never happened until last year. Due to the great success of Cavalleria Rusticana in 2018, the COP has decided to perform the opera two times with ticketing for a public of 1,400 people.
